The professional league competition for football clubs at the top of the Italian football league system is called the Serie A – it is one of the largest and most popular competitions worldwide, often depicted as the most tactical national league. The successfull competition was founded in 1929. The Serie A hosts three of the world’s most famous clubs: Juventus, Internazionale and AC Milan. Capital city Rome is home to great clubs AS Roma and Lazio Roma.

Every season, 20 Italian clubs compete in the Serie A. Each club plays a total of 38 matches. The three lowest-placed teams are relegated to Serie B. The top four teams in the Serie A qualify directly to the UEFA Champions League group stages – number five and six qualify for the UEFA Europa League.

After ten wins, a star is added to the team badge, to represent the important trophies the club has won. Juventus has won the most: they are wearing three stars. Internazionale and AC Milan each wear one star (18 titles).
