Southampton is a professional English football club from the port city of Southampton. The club was founded in 1885 as St Mary’s YMA and competes in the Premier League. The Saints played their home matches at the Dell stadium for over a century. Due to its small capacity, they moved to their new St Mary’s Stadium in 2001. St Mary’s Stadium has a capacity of almost 33,000 – more than twice as much as the Dell (15,000).
Southampton played in several leagues; they were founding members of the Premier League but struggled against relegation for years. They played outside the top flight of English football from 2005 to 2012. In the season of 2012-13, Southampton finally returned to the Premier League, where they have been competing ever since. In 2016, they even ended sixth at the Premier League table: a club record!
