The 2. Bundesliga is the second division of professional football in Germany. The competition was founded in 1974 and was contested by 40 clubs, split into a northern and southern division with 20 clubs each. It was reduced to a single division in 1981. Nowadays, the 2. Bundesliga is contested by 18 clubs. Each team plays 34 matches every season. Numbers one and two are directly promoted to the Bundesliga. Number three has to compete against (and win from) number 16 in the Bundesliga, in order to be promoted. The two lowest placed teams (number 17 and 18) are relegated to the 3. Liga.
